Life and career

Chandrashekara's journey in the art world began against the backdrop of his upbringing in a rural agricultural family in Bangalore. In 1973, he achieved his Diploma in drawing and painting and commenced his career as a drawing teacher at Bangalore City Corporation School. Subsequently, he pursued a Diploma in drawing and painting, followed by a master's course in arts in 1975 at Ken School of Arts, Bangalore. In 1980, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Graphic printmaking from Kala Bhavan. His artistic journey led him to explore various mediums, including graphic etchings and oil paintings, which he employed in his artistic endeavors throughout India.

In his initial days, he started drawing and painting using watercolor, postal colors, oil paint, and tempera. He then used digital prints, printmaking, and photography. He did etchings[5] applying intaglio techniques. He worked with lithography and serigraphy. In serigraphy, he used a foam binder with a pigmentation technique. Over the years he has adapted a wide range of media to his works.

Born into a society with hierarchies, he witnessed an unhealthy society all along. The contradictions and inequalities he witnessed manifested in many of his artworks including his series Stitch. He was called "Stitch Chandrashekara".[6] He was presented many awards and scholarships for his work and has participated in several major national and international exhibitions. He also curated several artist camps[7] across India organized by national and regional centers of Lalit Kala Akademi, Ken School of Art and SAARC.

Dr C Chandrashekara served as Dean of Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore from 1989 to 1990. During 1993-94, he held the positions of Vice-President and General Secretary for the 4th and 5th Karnataka Kala Mela. He was a Member of the Executive Board of the South-Central Zone Cultural Centre in Nagpur and Tanjore, a Governing Council Member of Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore, and a Member (1995-1997) of the National Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. From 1995 to 1998, he also served as Chairman of the Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi. In the late 90s, he was appointed as a Member of the Board of Studies at Bangalore University and Kuvempu University. He was also empaneled as a judge[8] in the selection committee for the Karnataka State Film Awards 2011.
