Buzuayehu Tadele Bizenu (born 21 November 1954) is an Ethiopian business executive and the chairman of East African Holding, an Ethiopian industrial group active in several sectors including cement, mining, construction, real estate, transport and logistics, manufacturing of consumer goods, and agribusiness.[1][2][3] In 2025, Forbes Africa described Buzuayehu T. Bizenu as the chairman of East African Holding with a proven track record across seven strategic sectors, leading one of Ethiopia’s most diversified industrial conglomerates and playing a pivotal role in driving national economic development. The report noted that under his leadership, the group employed more than 10,000 people and was preparing its fourth generation of leaders through structured succession planning.[4]
Early life and education
Buzuayehu was born in Hagere Selam, Ethiopia, and later moved with his family to Dila. He attended Emperor Dawit Primary School and Teferi Mekonnen Secondary School in Addis Ababa.He later studied at Cambridge International College.[5]
Career
Buzuayehu began his career in 1976 in the family’s coffee-washing and processing business. By the late 1970s he had expanded into trading and imports, and during the 1980s into manufacturing.[1] He later consolidated the family’s enterprises into what became East African Holding, a diversified business group.[2][6]
In 2021, East African Holding and West China Cement entered into a joint venture[7] to build Lemi National Cement Factory, designed with a capacity of 10,000 tones per day of clinker. The plant was inaugurated in 2024 and is considered one of the largest cement factories in Africa.[8][9] The production capacity of the factory equates 150,000 quintals of cement per day.[10]
Business approach
In interviews, Buzuayehu has described his management style as decentralized and value-driven, the roots of which he attributes to his father.[5] His company is reportedly "intent on supporting flagship initiatives" in Ethiopia's private sector.[11]
Philanthropy
In 2019, the Buzuayehu Tadele Family Foundation (BTFF) was established to organize the family’s philanthropic work. The foundation has supported community feeding programs, housing projects, student financial assistance, and environmental initiatives.[12][13][14]
Personal life
Buzuayehu is married and has six children. He lives in Addis Ababa.[5]
