Bulletproof Soul, and often abbreviated as BPS,[citation needed] is an American alternative hip-hop and neo-soul music collective, music label, and entertainment conglomerate formed in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Florida in 2021.[2] Members of Bulletproof Soul include Austin Moore-Farrow, Nyyjerya, DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, Lofty305, Amouranth, Angela Davis, eqobKING, SLWJMZ, Kengeta, Ali Wisdom, TWENTYN9NE, FK Garland, Alek Oni, JACOB SONGS, Wolvenoir, Lauren Ashcraft, and Unkwnexposure.[citation needed]

Bulletproof Soul was founded by Austin Moore-Farrow.[3] The collective focuses on creating content around concepts such as human rights, community, and labor rights.[citation needed] The music and art collective’s debut album, Grasping Things at the Root, sets out to broach the topic of community in pop culture, as well as dialectical materialism.[4][5] One way in which this is presented is the album cover which takes on influence from A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders featuring around 20 community figures on the cover.[citation needed]

Grasping Things At The Root

Grasping Things at the Root is an introduction to Bulletproof Soul and the values the collective stands for. Dialectical materialism, social conditioning, and material conditions are constant themes throughout the album. Grasping Things at the Root incorporates a host of different genres. The album’s first single was “The Whip”, a track labeled by The Word is Bond as “different and refreshing.”[6][7][8] The twist in Grasping Things at the Root’s story is that the album is about everyone in society.

The title Grasping Things at the Root comes from an Angela Davis quote where she stated, “Being radical is simply grasping things at the root.”[9] As well as the album title being inspired by Angela Davis, the album cover was visually inspired by A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders. This is a reference to both the cultural impact the group had, and the feeling of community A Tribe Called Quest evoked according to the group. The album cover additionally features an adapted poem from William Morris around its border.[citation needed]
