The term "building material" refers to any material that is employed in the building process. Building materials have been made out of a wide variety of naturally existing resources, including clay, pebbles, sand, wood, and even twigs and leaves at one time or another. In addition to materials that exist naturally, there are a large number of items manufactured by man, with some being more synthetic than others. The production of building materials is an established industry in many countries, and the use of these materials is typically segmented into specific specialty trades, such as carpentry, insulation, plumbing, and roofing work. The manufacturing of building materials is an established industry in many countries. They contribute to the construction of dwellings and other buildings, as well as ecosystems.

The purchase price of construction materials is the initial economic cost of such items. This is often the factor that serves as the basis for deciding the materials to use. People may sometimes take into account the energy savings or the longevity of the materials and see the benefit in paying a higher initial cost in exchange for a reduced lifetime cost. This is known as "paying up front for long-term savings." For instance, the installation of an asphalt shingle roof is less expensive than that of a metal roof; yet, given that the metal roof will last longer, the asphalt shingle roof will incur lower annual expenditures during its lifespan. It's possible that some materials need more maintenance than others, and the expenses of upkeep that are unique to certain materials might also play a role in the ultimate selection. If the structure is destroyed, for example by fire or wind, or if the material is not as robust as stated, then there is a risk that the lifetime cost of the material will be higher than expected. It is important to take into account the cost of the materials in order to mitigate the risk of purchasing combustible materials in order to extend the lifespan. If something has to be done, then it should be done properly, as the proverb goes.
