Buddhika Jayaratne (බුද්ධික ජයරත්න) is a Sri Lankan film and television actor, scriptwriter, and director. He made his international cinema debut in 2023, starring in Arugam Bay by Marco Carmal (an Israeli production) and Sunny's Mansion[1] by Herman Perera (an Australian production). This achievement marked him as one of the few Sri Lankan actors to venture into the international film arena.

Jayaratne made his directorial debut with with the romantic film Dedunu Wessa in 2020, a film that he also wrote and co-produced by Colombo Pictures and Piyal Seneviratne.[2]

Jayaratne received the Best Actor (Negative) award in 2013 for his outstanding performance in Senasuru Maruwa[3] at the Derana Film Awards.

Personal life

Don Andrikku Jayaratne Buddhika Nirodha Dananjaya Jayaratne, was born on 1 August 1974, in Ragama, Sri Lanka, as the only child of Daya and Sumithra Jayaratne. His mother, Sumithra, served as a Nursing Sister In charge at King Fahd University Hospital in Saudi Arabia[4] until her retirement, while his father worked for the Coconut Cultivation Board in Sri Lanka[5] for 40 years and retired as the Deputy General Manager.

Jayaratne completed his primary education at Kumara xx, Colombo, and attended Ananda College, Colombo[6], for his secondary education. After completing his education, Jayaratne joined the aviation industry. He also worked as a freelance fashion designer and conducted a few fashion shows during this time. His career in the aviation industry ended when he transitioned to the film industry in 2001, but he continued his passion for dress designing by contributing to film productions as a costume designer.[7] Rosa Wasanthaya, Dedunu Wessa, and Amuthu Minissu[8] are a few of his productions for which Jayaratne served as the costume designer.

Jayaratne married Upachala Harankahadeniya in 2014, and their son, Thejaan Jayaratne, was born in 2015.

Jayaratne, who is keen on sustainable living, launched a small business in 2019, Artha by Buddhika Jayaratne.[9][10] The business designs, manufactures, and sells upcycled furniture and rustic furniture made of reclaimed wood, while also supporting tradesmen who have lost their livelihoods due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting career

Jayaratne made his acting debut in Rosa Wasanthaya, directed by , in 2001, which he initially joined the production as the costume designer. Jayaratne continued to work with Warnasuriya in several projects, including Senasuru Maruwa, for which he won the Best Actor (Negative) Award for his role at the 2019 Derana Film Awards.[11]

In 2002, Jayaratne ventured into the Sri Lankan teledrama industry with the role of Depath Nai[12], a teledrama by Eranga Senarathna. Subsequently, Jayaratne received several jury awards for his performances in teledramas. Throughout his career, he collaborated with renowned Sri Lankan teledrama and film directors such as Jayantha Chandrasiri, Senesh Dissanaike, and Sanjaya Nirmal.

In 2023, Jayaratne made his first international appearance in Arugam Bay, directed by Marco Carmel and produced by United Channel Movies (UCM) in Israel. His second international feature film, Sunny's Mansion[13], produced by Zayan Productions in Australia, is scheduled to be released in 2023. The film was written and directed by award winning Australian director and film writer[14] Herman Perera.
