Britney Coleman (born January 23, 1989) is an American musical theatre actress.
Life and career [edit]
Britney Coleman was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[1] She started her stage career in third grade playing Mary in a production of The Secret Garden. Coleman was accepted to the Musical Theatre BFA program at the University of Michigan. While attending, Coleman performed in Ragtime as Sarah and in the debut casts of new theatrical productions. Coleman gained notoriety performing as Bellatrix Lestrange in the viral production of A Very Potter Musical with the widely popular Team Starkid performance group at Michigan.[2] With Team Starkid, Coleman also performed in A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. She did not physically appear in their musical Twisted, a Wicked-parody of the villain Jafar from Aladdin, but she did record a version of the song “A Thousand and One Nights” with Carlos Valdes which played over the production’s end credits.[3] Coleman graduated from University of Michigan in 2011.[4]
In 2019, Coleman reunited with Team Starkid to celebrate the company's 10th Anniversary with a concert at the Ace Hotel Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.[5] In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she performed as Belle on Team Starkid’s A VHS Christmas Carol: A Live Visual Album.[6]
In 2022, it was announced that Coleman would play the role of Barbara Maitland in the National Tour of Beetlejuice.[7] Coleman would star opposite her former college classmate and one-time roommate Will Swenson, who would play Adam Maitland.[4] In April of 2023, it was announced that Coleman would lead the new national tour of director Marianne Elliott's Tony-winning, gender-swapped revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company as Bobbie, a role which she understudied on Broadway.[8] In an interview with Broadway.com, Coleman shared that she is “thrilled to be many people’s first woman of color leading a Sondheim show at this scale across America.”[9]
Personal life[edit]
Coleman describes herself as proficient in violin, mandolin, basic acoustic guitar, electric bass, ukelele, and piano. In 2019, Coleman was recognized online as one of the "10 Hottest Chorus Girls on Broadway."[10] In 2020, Coleman appeared on fellow Broadway actress Salisha Thomas’s Black Hair in the Big Leagues podcast. Coleman shared her experiences living with mixed hair, styling tips, and anecdotes of how she fits her hair under wigs for theatrical performances.[11]
