Brishkay Ahmed is a Afghan-Canadian director and writer who makes documentary films that have a focus on women's rights..[1],[2],[3] She is known for her films Unveiled: The Kohistan Video Scandal [4], The Story of the Burqa [5], Wanting the Wine [6] , Aryana Resurrected [7], and In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland[8].
Early Life
Ahmed was born in Afghanistan and later immigrated to Canada when she was 12 years old.[9]. Ahmed studied film at New York University and furthered her education by studying journalism at Langara College, and attending the Iranian Young Cinema Society.[10]
Film Career
Ahmed became interested in film through her passion for journalism [11]. Ahmed's film career is quite extensive, and her documentaries have been well received. Her documentary The Story of the Burqa discussed the history and meaning behind the garment the Burqa|burqa, its connection to Afghan women, and whether the garment should still exist in society [12] [13]. The film was a feature at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival|Doxa 2012 film festival and was supported by the National Film Board of Canada and Super Channel[14]. Ahmed film Unveiled: 2012 Kohistan video case|The Kohistan Video Scandal uncovered an honour killing that was due to online video circling of young Pakistani girls clapping and singing [15]. The film aimed to advance the rights of Pakistani women[16], and was a feature at the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival[17] [18]. Ahemds next film Aryana resurrected looked at the transition of the land Aryana becoming Afghanistan, and how it affected the women their and the nations faith.[19],[20],[21] Ahmed followed the film with a documentary In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland. Ahmed's documentary In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland was a Feature at the Doxa film festival, it focused on how afghan women reporters (from the organization Zan TV|Zan Tv), are able to pursue journalism and showed the effects of the Us and Taliban peace talks have on afghan women[22]. The documentary was called an "eye-opening glimpse into the newsroom"[23], and that it showed the Afghan women as courageous but also cheerful[24].
Ahmed's film career has lead her to other projects; her documentary The Story of the Burqa lead her to write and premiere the play Burqa Boutique, which premiered at Killjoy Theatre [25]. Ahmeds play explored the Muslim women diversities and once again examined the agenda behind the burqa and its greater symbolization of societies behaviors towards women[26]. Being an Afghan women Ahmed films and the continuation of that career centers around the rights and freedoms of Muslim women [27]. Ahmed's film career that focused on Afghanistan also lead her to work in television in the country. She was the writer and co-director of Between You and Me, Afghanistan's popular primetime drama series[28].
Project Recognitions
Ahmed's extensive career has lead her and her projects to be recognized. PowHerhouse has named Ahmed as an artist of impact, which has lead Ahmed to be a prominent speaker at their Gather for Her events[29]. Ahmed has also been interviewed on the Girls of Wisdom by friend and known afghan singer Mozhdah Jamalzadah [30]. Ahmed documentary Story of Burqa being recognized also lead her to be on the cover of a known Canadian paper, the The Georgia Straight|Georgia Straight.[31] Ahmed has also been recognized through awards. Ahmed's film Unveiled: The Kohistan Video Scandal Winner won Best Feature Documentary: Women's Rights Subject at the American Filmatic Arts Awards and was nominated for an award at the Los Angeles Cinefest[32]. Ahmed was nominated for the Colin Low Award for Best Canadian Director at Doxa film festival for her directing in her documentary In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland[33]. The Regina International Film Festival also has nominated Ahmed's film In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland for the award for Canadian Documentary Long film [34]
