Brian Guy James Barton (born 6 August 1958) is an English businessman who co-founded The Turquoise Holiday Company.[1][2] in 2002[3], following on from the sale of Bridge the World to Travelbag[4].

Early life

Barton was born in Leicester, Leicestershire in 1958, son of Jim (an opthalmic surgeon) and Sheila, the third of five children. The family moved around a lot while Barton was young, living in Manchester for a number of years, before settling permanently in Taunton, Somerset when Barton was eight[5]. His father treated several Somerset players for eye ailments in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including West Indians Viv Richards and Joel Garner.

Barton was educated at The Castle School, a secondary school in Taunton. When aged 17, he hitchhiked to Morocco, beginning a long fascination with travel. He attended University College London for 2 weeks in 1976, studying biochemistry, before dropping out to go travelling around the world[6]

Career

Barton visited Japan, where he stayed for over three years, including appearing as an extra in several kaiju films, before working as a taxi driver in Sydney, where amongst other passengers he once picked up Ridley Scott. Upon returning to England, he began work at Trailfinders before founding Bridge the World with colleague Jerry Bridge in 1989[7]. The business performed well, and in 2001 was sold to travel agent TravelBag.

Barton, along with colleagues James and Sue Bell, then founded Turquoise Holidays in 2002.[1] The business has won the Conde Nast Traveller "Best Tour Operator" award on multiple occasions, most recently in 2024.[8][9]

Barton is married to Caroline (m. 1993), has three children, and lives in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
