Brian Miller Adesman (born August 6, 1989) is a litigator, trial lawyer,[1] and legal correspondent in Los Angeles, California, known for taking big cases to trial against powerful people[2] and institutions.[3] Brian Adesman is the founder and principal of the law firm Miller Adesman, PLC[1] and has been dubbed a "powerhouse" attorney by major media outlets.[4]

Many of Brian Adesman's recent cases have garnered widespread media attention, including a federal class action lawsuit that Brian Adesman filed against major health insurance company, Aetna,[5] as well as a recent civil action that Adesman filed against Caesar the "Dog Whisperer" Milan, in which Adesman alleged Milan's pit bull killed Queen Latifah's dog before Milan covered up the attack by claiming the dog was hit by a car.[6] This story was never made public until Adesman filed the complaint in court.[7]

Early Life

Brian Adesman was born on August 6, 1989, in Long Island, New York. At the age of two, Brian Adesman and his family moved to a small town in Southern Oregon where he was raised.[8] His mother is Dr. Robin Miller,[9] author, medical reporter, and medical doctor who specializes in integrative medicine.[10] His father is Dr. Peter Adesman,[9] a gastroenterologist and wine maker.[11] Brian Adesman has one brother, 22 months older, named David Adesman.[9] Brian Adesman attended high school at St. Mary's School where he made the honor roll,[12] played varsity football,[13] and was ranked one of the top linebackers in the Southern Cascade League as a sophomore.[14]

Education

Brian Adesman earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon, where he graduated summa cum laude with a 4.03 GPA.[15] He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor from USC Gould School of Law,[16] where he graduated at the top of his class with certificates in Media & Entertainment Law and Business Law. [17] During law school, Brian Adesman worked in the Business & Legal Affairs department of Legendary Entertainment, where he drafted "various agreements including: option purchase agreements, director agreements, producer agreements, and writer agreements."[18] Upon graduation, Brian Adesman was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society.[19]

Early Career

After graduating law school, Brian Adesman worked for the AmLaw 100 law firm Jenner & Block[20] for over five years,[21] where he primarily focused on complex commercial litigation,[22] professional responsibility litigation,[23] and international dispute resolution.[24]

Wanting to branch out and gain more trial experience, Brian Adesman founded his own plaintiff-side law firm, Miller Adesman, PLC, in 2021.[24]

Notable Cases

On September 11, 2021, Brian Adesman filed a class action lawsuit against major health insurance company Aetna in federal court, alleging that "in administering the Aetna Plans, Aetna treats mental health as less important than physical health."[25] Regarding the lawsuit, Adesman was reported in the media saying, "Insurance companies are not above the law and profits can’t come before people."[26][27]

That same year, Brian Adesman filed a lawsuit alleging that Caesar the "Dog Whisperer" Milan's pit bull, Junior, allegedly killed Queen Latifah's dog and that Millan allegedly attempted to cover up the incident by telling his staff to inform the actress that her dog was hit and killed by a car.[28] The pit bull also allegedly attacked gymnast Lidia Matiss in 2017 who was named as the plaintiff in the lawsuit.[29] In response to the lawsuit, Millan claimed Matiss had assumed the risk of being attacked because she knew the dog was dangerous and claimed that Matiss was "negligent," though Milan did not specify how.[30] Later, Millan would go on to publicly deny claims that his pit bull, Junior, killed Queen Latifah's dog, but Brian Adesman said the following about the incident, while being interviewed by the media:

Basically, as lawyers, we have a duty to investigate any potential case that we're going to file in court. And we're also considered officers of the court and have an obligation to make sure that any claims we make are supported by evidence, and that they're not frivolous, and that they're not untrue.

And so generally speaking with any case before we draft and file a complaint, we will investigate the surrounding circumstances. And that can entail a bunch of different things up to hiring private investigators or interviewing witnesses, talking with people who were around the scene of the incident at that time.

And [the fact that Junior Killed Queen Latifah's dog] was something that we uncovered and definitely corroborated with lots of evidence. And it's currently, it's something that they deny and that Cesar Millan has denied ever since the story broke. But I can assure you that I have seen the evidence and we feel very confident in making that claim that [the attack] did, in fact, happen.[24]

This story was never made public until Adesman filed the complaint in court.[31]

Pro Bono Practice

Brian Adesman's pro bono practice focuses on helping victims of domestic violence. Adesman has worked closely with California's Family Violence Appellate Project to accomplish this goal.[32]
