Bota Jardemalie (Alma-Ata, 10 July 1976), a Harvard Law graduate and licensed attorney in the State of New York,[1][2] is a human rights defender from Kazakhstan.
For years, she has defended Kazakh opposition members, political activists and victims of torture and has worked on cases of politically motivated extradition from the EU.[3] She has advocated on various issues, including Interpol reform, EU personal sanctions regimes, financial inclusion, the misuse of mutual legal cooperation in politically motivated cases, crypto-currency legislation, and problems related to the abuse of AML/CFT legislations.[4]
In 2018 and 2021, the European Parliament has called on the Kazakh authorities to stop harassing her.[5] Her story has been depicted also by Tom Burgis, in his book Kleptopia.
Her brother, Iskander Yerimbetov, was arrested in 2017 for allegedly financial crimes and sentenced to seven years.[6][7] He was allegedly tortured in the detention center,[8][9] and was released in 2019 following international pressure, including an opinion by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention[10] and the European Parliament.[11]
