Borun Thokchom is a documentary filmmaker and journalist from Manipur.[1][2] In 2011, he won the National Award for best debut film of a director for his documentary The Silent Poet (2011) at the 59th National Film Awards.[3][4]
In 2020, he won the Best Documentary award at the 9th Mumbai Short International Film Festival for I Rise.[5]
Early life and education
Borun Thokchom was born in Imphal, Manipur. He completed a degree in Mass communication and Video production from the St. Anthony’s College in Shillong. Before beginning his career in media and non-fiction filmmaking, he worked as a television journalist in Manipur.[6]
Career
Borun Thokchom’s debut documentary The Silent Poet focuses on civil rights activist Irom Sharmila and exploring her poetry and personal expression amid her prolonged non-violent protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Manipur. The film received critical acclaim, winning the National Film Award for Best Debut Film of a Director (non-feature) at 59th National Film Awards for 2011, and the Best Documentary award at the 2nd Siliguri International Short and Documentary Film Festival.[7][8][3]
His subsequent feature documentary I Rise profiles Indian boxer Laishram Sarita Devi, chronicling her journey following the 2014 Asian Games controversy and her continued determination as an athlete. Produced by the Films Division of India, the film was screened at multiple festivals and won Best Documentary at the 9th Mumbai Short International Film Festival in 2020, along with the Best Film on Women (Outstanding Achievement Award) at the Tagore International Film Festival the same year.[9][5]
