Borna Derakhshani (برنا درخشانی; born 2002) is an Iranian chess player representing the United Kingdom since April 2018.[1] He was awarded the title World Chess Federation Master (FM) in 2016.[2] He is the brother of Dorsa Derakhshani who was awarded the titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster in 2016.

Education

Derakhshani attends CATS College Canterbury.[3]

Chess career in Iran

Borna Derakhshani was a Chess Youth Champion in Iran[4] and won a silver medal in the Individual Asian Chess Championship in 2012.[5] Borna also won several youth open international tournaments, including in Biel, Switzerland;[6] Abu Dhabi in 2013, 2014, and 2015;[7] the Youth International in Gibraltar August 2017;[8] and the Asian Youth Team Chess Championship in China in 2016 with a silver medal on Board 2.[9]

Conflict with Iranian Chess Federation

In February 2017 Iranian Chess Federation banned Borna Derakhshani from playing for the Iranian youth national team or any other tournament in Iran because he played against an Israeli grandmaster, Alexander Huzman, in the first round of the international Gibraltar chess tournament in January 2017.[10] It is known in Iran that Iranian sportsmen should not play against Israel because Iran doesn’t recognize Israel as an official country.[11]

Career in the United Kingdom

After he got banned and received several bad press releases from the news, media, and authorities, Borna has not returned to Iran since February 2017. [12] He moved to the UK with a child student visa and studied in one of the best international boarding schools in the UK. [12] Borna switched from the Iranian Chess Federation to the UK Chess Federation. He won the British Youth Chess Championship Under 16 [13] in 2018 and won Under 18 in 2019. [14] He also won a silver medal and placed second in the Under 21 British Chess Championship. [15] Borna represented the UK national team in 2019 the European Team Youth Chess Championship where he finished second on Board 2. [16] He is also a member of the 4NCL UK super league, playing for the Wood Green team. [17]
