Boris Moshenkov (born July 27, 1990) is a Canadian artist, best known as a painter. His work focuses on explorations of identity, self-discovery, and the human experience through various visual mediums.[1]

Early life and education

Moshenkov was born in Soviet Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and later immigrated to Israel before settling in Canada. He pursued his passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the University of British Columbia.[2]

Career

In 2021, Moshenkov gained recognition for his artistic talent when he was selected in the top 20 out of a million artists who applied to dearMoon.[3] The dearMoon program, led by SpaceX,[4] aims to take eight artists on a journey around the moon.[5] Notable artists such as Steve Aoki and T.O.P were chosen for this opportunity.[6][7]

Samsung commissioned Moshenkov to create a three-dimensional painting using recycled electronics, showcasing his ability to merge art and upcycling collage. This collaboration highlights his commitment to sustainability.[8]

Moshenkov participated in a unique documentary project where he voluntarily isolated himself in an all-white room for 50 days. This experience allowed him to delve deeper into his artistic process and explore introspection and self-reflection in his work. He took on challenges such as a week-long silent meditation to delve deeper into the unconscious. This project was inspired by his artistic hero's from whom the premise of the project came about, that artists are more creative under isolation and limitations.[9]

Moshenkov's artistry has attracted significant media attention, with interviews featured in prominent outlets. His work has been displayed on a Times Square 8,500 sq. ft. digital billboard for several weeks, displaying himself with a thought-provoking quote, "the future doesn't exist, imagination does."[10]

He has also received commissions from esteemed collectors, billionaires, notable public figures, and corporations.[11]

Style and influences

Boris Moshenkov's artistic style is characterized by his exploration of themes related to identity, self-discovery, and the human condition. He employs various mediums, including painting, drawing, and mixed media, to express his artistic vision.

Inspired by his personal journey of self-discovery, Moshenkov's art invites viewers to reflect on their place in the world and contemplate the complexities of human existence. His work challenges traditional artistic norms, pushing the boundaries of form and technique.[12]
