Bonk (BONK) is a dog-themed cryptocurrency and memecoin launched on the Solana blockchain on December 25, 2022.[1] Branded as "the first Solana dog coin for the people, by the people," Bonk was created to reinvigorate community engagement and counter what its founders perceived as the influence of predatory venture capital-backed tokens on the network.[2][3][4]
History
Bonk was launched as a "Christmas gift" to the Solana community in December 2022.[5] The coin was developed by a group of anonymous contributors, one of whom is known by the pseudonym "Nom," a well-known developer within the Solana ecosystem. The project emerged as a response to dissatisfaction with centralized influences within the Solana blockchain.[6]
Tokenomics
The total supply of BONK is capped at 100 trillion tokens. At launch, 50% of the total supply was airdropped to various Solana ecosystem participants, including NFT collectors, developers, and DeFi users. The remaining 50% was reserved for initiatives such as:
- The Bonk Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO)
- Marketing campaigns
- Development and maintenance of the ecosystem
- Community grants and adoption incentives
Market Performance
Bonk experienced significant price volatility following its launch—typical of many memecoins.[7] As of April 2, 2025, BONK trades at approximately $0.000012 per token, with a 24-hour trading volume of around $197.93 million. With an estimated 78.1 trillion BONK in circulation, the coin has a market capitalization of roughly $946 million.[8][9]
Criticism
Bonk, like many memecoins, has faced criticism over concerns regarding its long-term utility and sustainability.[10] Critics point out the speculative nature of the token and argue that its price is largely influenced by social media hype and community sentiment rather than fundamental utility or use-case adoption.[11]
