Bongomin Francis Bodo is a Ugandan Paediatrician and Public Health Specialist who serves as a National Professional Officer in charge of Child and Adolescent Health at the World Health Organization Uganda Country Office in Kampala, Uganda since 2016. From 2011 until 2015 he served as a Paediatrician and Head of Paediatrics Department at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital as well as Honorary Lecturer at Gulu University Medical School. He also serves as a member of the editorial advisors of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization [1].

Background and education

He was born in Gulu District in the Northern Region of Uganda in 1978 to Dr. Timon Kalisto Bodo and Margaret Aweko. After attending primary schools in Gulu and Masindi districts and secondary schools in Masindi and Hoima districts respectively. He was admitted to Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 1998, where she studied human medicine. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2003[2]. He followed that with a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Paediatrics and Child Health from Makerere University. His third degree was a Master of Public Health (MPH) obtained from the University of Leeds, UK.

Career

Bongomin started out as an Intern doctor in St Mary's Hospital medical officer - Lacor in Gulu district northern Uganda and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Eastern Uganda. After internship he worked in Pope John Hospital in Aber, Oyam district, Pader district Local government as well as with Association of Volunteers in International Service (AVSI), an Italian International NGO with AVSI while based at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital; all in Uganda. He has also worked with the Ministry Health at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital initially as a Medical Officer and rose through the ranks to become a Medical Officer Special Grade in Paediatrics and head of Paediatrics Department. He has also served as a zonal malaria coordinator. Between 2015 and 2016 he worked in the Republic of South Sudan on secondment by the Government of Uganda to support strengthening of the civil service workforce in South Sudan as part of a IGAD / UNDP Project funded by the government of Norway. He has concurrently taught at Gulu University in the Medical School and in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment as a Honorary Lecturer. He has served on the committee of Uganda Paediatric Association, as well as board member for East Africa Centre for Vaccines and Immunization (ECAVI).

Other considerations

Bongomin Bodo a has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed articles, in the areas of his medical expertise in different medical journals [3]and serves on the board of editorial Advisors of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. He is a reviewer for several scientific medical journals. His is a member of number of Local and International Professional Societies including the Uganda Medical Association, the Uganda Paediatric Association, the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene [4] and the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition .
