Borislav “Bobby” Valchev (Bulgarian: Борислав “Боби” Вълчев; born 18 November 1982) is a Bulgarian-born jazz musician, singer, pianist, trumpeter, composer, and music educator based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is known for his improvisational performance style and has been active in both the Bulgarian and UAE jazz scenes, performing at international festivals and collaborating with internationally recognized artists.
Early life and education
Valchev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. He began studying piano at the age of five and made his first broadcast appearance on Bulgarian National Radio at the age of six. As a member of the Sofia Boys Choir, he toured and performed internationally.[1]
He studied piano and trumpet at the National Music School “Lyubomir Pipkov” in Sofia, and later earned two master's degrees from the National Academy of Music “Pancho Vladigerov” — one in Jazz Piano and another in Music Theory and Pedagogy.[1] He also trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and was an assistant in the jazz masterclasses of pianist Milcho Leviev.[1]
Career
Valchev began his professional career in Bulgaria, performing and arranging for national pop and jazz acts. In 2010, he relocated to Dubai, where he became active in the city’s jazz scene. He has performed at events and venues including Dubai Opera, Expo 2020, the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the Dubai Jazz Festival.[2]
In 2016, Valchev co-founded the jazz-lounge duo F&B with Romanian singer Florentina Tuchel. Their debut album, Stereotype, was featured in a profile by The National, which noted the duo’s musical chemistry and Valchev’s background performing with artists such as George Benson, Marcus Miller, and Billy Cobham.[3]
In 2024, Valchev performed at the Ancient Theatre of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, with Big Band Plovdiv and Claude J. Woods (Earth, Wind & Fire Experience). The concert, held in a candlelit setting, was part of the city’s cultural calendar and received coverage from Jazz FM Bulgaria.[4]
Musical style
Valchev’s musical approach blends classical training with jazz improvisation. He emphasizes spontaneity in live performance, and his artistic philosophy is often described by the phrase "Never twice the same".[1]
Teaching
In addition to performing, Valchev works as a music educator. He teaches piano, trumpet, voice, and theory in Dubai and has engaged in projects focused on music as a tool for emotional development and therapy.[2]
