Bobby C. Lee is a software engineer, founder and CEO of Ballet Global Inc., a cryptocurrency hardware wallet company based in the United States. Lee regularly appears on business media outlets such as Bloomberg and CNBC to give commentary on cryptocurrency markets, regulations, and industry trends.

Early Life

Bobby Lee was born in Côte d'Ivoire on April 1, 1975 and he moved to the United States in 1989. He graduated from Stanford University in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and finished his master’s degree in computer science at Stanford University in 1998. Lee obtained his Global Executive MBA degree from CEIBS in 2014.[1]

Lee's brother, Charlie Lee, is the creator of Litecoin and he serves as the managing director of the Litecoin Foundation.[2]

Career

Bobby Lee began his career as a software engineer for Yahoo! and went on to become a director of software engineering at Dell EMC, CTO at SMG BesTV, and VP of Technology at Walmart E-commerce in China.[3][4]

Bobby Lee is an entrepreneur and early pioneer in the cryptocurrency industry. He was the co-founder of BTCChina, the first Bitcoin exchange established in China, and served as its CEO from 2013-2018.[5] After the collapse of Mt. Gox in early 2014, BTCChina became the longest-running cryptocurrency exchange in the world. [6]

In May 2014 Lee was appointed to the Bitcoin Foundation board of directors.[7] In 2016 BTCC launched BTCC Mint, a series of physical titanium coins containing newly-mined bitcoins that came directly from Bitcoin blocks mined by BTCC’s own BTCC Mining Pool which means that these Bitcoin have no prior transaction history on the blockchain. Lee was the designer and coin maker of BTCC Mint coins.[8][9]

In September 2017 BTCC shut down its operations in China due to regulatory pressure from the Chinese government. Its international business continued unaffected.[10] Lee sold BTCC in 2018 to a Hong Kong investment firm for an undisclosed amount.[9]

In early 2019 Lee founded Ballet Global Inc., a cryptocurrency hardware wallet maker based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lee currently serves as CEO of the company.[11]

In May, 2021, Bobby Lee’s book “The Promise of Bitcoin” was published by McGraw Hill. In the book he argues that Bitcoin is superior to traditional monetary systems and that it will transform the global economy. The book was a Wall Street Journal bestseller in May, 2021.[12][4]
