Robert "Bob" Waltenspiel (born May 1, 1973) is an American salesman, entrepreneur, podcaster, community organizer, and public speaker. He is the founder of IT in the D and the Detroit Podcasting Company, which produces podcasts for various Metro Detroiters.
Early Life
Waltenspiel was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan to German-immigrant parents. He was raised in Warren, Michigan.
Career
Waltenspiel has been a career salesperson, working for corporations such as Slalom, Cisco Systems, and Hewlett-Packard.
Entrepreneurship and Business Ventures
Waltenspiel founded IT in the D in 2007 as a business networking organization, holding monthly events every third Thursday at 5PM. They professed to be the "anti-group" by having a non-sales culture, no cover charges, no speakers, and they were known for their cynical blog series titled, "Don't Be That Guy."
In 2010, IT in the D launched their 'Pink Slip Party' series, again throwing a wrench into the typical job fair. These events were held at bars and nightclubs, including St. Andrews Hall, whereas thousands of recruiters and job seekers would converge in a casual environment. These events would tote over 2,000 people that found gainful employment.
In 2013, the IT in the D Podcast would launch in a weekly format that would showcase the Metro Detroit IT community. It was recently featured in the Feedspot: Top 60 Best Technology Podcasts.
Public Speaking and Media Work
In 2018, Waltenspiel was a speaker at the TEDx Detroit Conference at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan.
In 2014, Waltenspiel was the Producer of the documentary Battles, Bouts and Brawls: The Story of Pro Wrestling in Detroit.
From 2010-2014, Waltenspiel was a featured speaker at the State of Michigan Shifting Gears program, earning an award in 2013 for Outstanding Contribution.
Waltenspiel has also been a keynote and featured speaker at various events throughout the years in Metro Detroit on topics ranging from network building to podcasting.
