Bob Ives (born March 1960) is a motorsports specialist, expedition crew and off-road driver from Hampshire, UK.

Early career and competitions

Bob's interest in off-road driving began in 1979 after a year-long trip around Australia.[1][2]

On his return to the UK, Bob competed in trials organised by the All Wheel Drive Club.[3] Later in his competitive career, he entered the Baja Espana in 1997 and the UAE Desert Challenge in 1998.

Bob is a farmer[4][5] in Hampshire, UK and also serves as a parish councillor[6]

Camel Trophy and accolades

Bob applied unsuccessfully three times[7] for the legendary Camel Trophy, the gruelling competitive expedition sometimes known as the "Olympics of 4x4"[8][2] because it was the most famous event of its kind in the world.[9] After reaching the finals on two occasions[4] Bob tried again in 1989 and was selected for Team UK along with his brother Joe.[10] This was a notable achievement as a million applications were received. [11][12]

Team UK, driving a Land Rover 110 with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine[13] was the winning team in Camel Trophy Amazon 1989[14][15][16][7][17], pushing the home team of Brazilians Ricardo Simonsen & Alfonso Celso-Baldrati to second place by just five points[14]. The event has been described as the "harshest"[18],"most gruelling of all"[19] and the "toughest ever, due to the severity of conditions during the 17-day epic at the height of the Amazon's unforgiving rainy season".[20]

This was to be the first and only time the United Kingdom was to win Camel Trophy in its twenty year history.[21][22]

To recognise this achievement, the Ives brothers were awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club[23], an annual recognition of British "outstanding demonstration of skill, courage and initiative in transportation on land, water or in the air"[24] and as such Bob was elevated to the same level of recognition as Amy Johnson, Jackie Stewart, Sterling Moss and Lewis Hamilton.

Bob returned to Camel Trophy events as staff member a further six times[2] and ran the Camel Trophy UK Off-Road Centre for five years[2].

Television work

Bob's career diversified from driving and expedition work to supporting automotive manufacturers such as Land Rover, Jeep and Mercedes[2] and working behind the scenes on television programmes such as BBC's Top Gear and Grand Tour and on the big screen with the Harry Potter and Discworld franchises.[25]
