Bo Wang is a Canadian computer scientist and computational biologist specializing in machine learning applications to biology and medicine. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, the inaugural Temerty Professor in AI Research and Education in Medicine, Chief AI Scientist at the University Health Network (UHN), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Senior Vice President & Head of Biomedical AI at Xaira Therapeutics.[1]
Education
Wang received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2017, where he worked under the supervision of Serafim Batzoglou on computational methods for integrating biological data.
Career
Wang joined the University of Toronto in 2020 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.[2] He was appointed as the inaugural Temerty Professor in AI Research and Education in Medicine at the Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM).
He serves as Chief AI Scientist at the University Health Network[3] (UHN), the largest research hospital in Canada. Wang is also a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research AI Chair[4] at the Vector Institute (Canada),[5] a position he has held since 2018.
In 2024, Wang joined Xaira Therapeutics as Senior Vice President and Head of Biomedical AI, where he leads efforts to apply artificial intelligence to drug discovery.
Research
Wang's research focuses on developing machine learning methods for analyzing biological and medical data, with applications spanning computational biology, medical imaging, and computer vision.
Single-Cell Foundation Models
Wang's lab developed scGPT,[6] a foundation model for single-cell transcriptomics that uses generative AI approaches to analyze gene expression data. Published in Nature Methods in 2024, scGPT became a highly influential single-cell foundation model, with over 1,000 citations.
Data Integration Methods
Wang developed Similarity Network Fusion (SNF),[7] a computational method for integrating multiple types of genomic data published in Nature Methods in 2014. SNF has been cited over 2,200 times.
His work on SIMLR[8] (Single-cell Interpretation via Multi-kernel LeaRning) provided methods for visualization and analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data, published in Nature Methods in 2017.
Medical Imaging
Wang's group developed Segment Anything in Medical Images (MedSAM),[9] a foundation model for medical image segmentation. Published in Nature Communications in 2024, MedSAM has received over 3,100 citations.
Virtual Cells
Wang co-authored a perspective in Cell (2024) titled "How to build the virtual cell with artificial intelligence: Priorities and opportunities."[10]
COVID-19 Research
Wang contributed to large-scale genetic studies of COVID-19 published in Nature identifying genetic mechanisms of critical illness.
