Blossom Social (operating as Blossom) is a Canadian financial technology company that operates a social investing platform for retail investors. The platform allows users to link self-directed brokerage accounts, share verified investment portfolios and trades, and discuss investment strategies within a community setting. The company is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia.

History

Founding and early development (2021–2022)

Blossom Social was founded in 2021 by Maxwell Nicholson, Kartik Bhutani, Annika Ng, and Brandon Beavis during a period of heightened retail investor activity in North American markets. The company launched its application on the Apple App Store and Google Play in May 2022.[1]

In October 2022, Blossom Social raised CA$750,000 in pre-seed financing. Early investors included Pareto Holdings, operated by Shutterstock founder Jon Oringer, and angel investor Zac Dolesky. At the time of the raise, the company had accumulated more than 2,000 users and reported approximately 10 percent week-over-week user growth. The company's original strategy was to become a registered investment dealer with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and offer direct stock trading through its platform, which it described as "Canada's first social brokerage".[1]

Blossom Social was also selected for Google's Women Founders accelerator cohort in 2022.[1]

Growth and strategic pivot (2023–2024)

The company subsequently abandoned its plans to become a registered brokerage, citing the complexity, costs, and geographic limitations of that approach. Instead, Blossom refocused on operating as a social network for investors. "It was the wrong strategy, so we scrapped those plans entirely just to focus on being the investing social network," said co-founder and CEO Maxwell Nicholson.[2]

In early 2024, the company launched an equity crowdfunding campaign on FrontFundr, initially targeting CA$500,000. The target was met within one day of launch. The round was subsequently expanded and ultimately closed at approximately CA$1 million, raised from 793 individual investors and setting a record for the largest single-campaign raise on the FrontFundr platform.[2]

In May 2024, Blossom Social closed a CA$2.1 million seed round. Investors included existing backer LOI Venture, new investor Goodwater Capital, and angel investors. The round brought the company's total funding to approximately CA$4 million. Blossom reported that it had grown to more than 125,000 users at the time of the raise, with more than 10,000 new users joining monthly.[2]

US expansion and further growth (2024–2025)

Following the 2024 seed round, Blossom expanded its platform to the United States market. The company reported reaching 275,000 users by early 2025, growing at approximately 10,000 new members per week.[3]

In April 2025, the company completed a further equity crowdfunding raise through FrontFundr, in which more than 1,100 community members invested a combined CA$1.86 million, which the company described as the most successful equity crowdfunding round in Canadian history. Combined with additional angel investment, the round totalled CA$3 million and brought cumulative funding to over CA$7 million.[4][3]

In May 2025, Blossom Social CEO Maxwell Nicholson joined representatives from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) to close the market, marking the company's milestone of 250,000 platform members. The company had established media partnerships with several Canadian exchange-traded fund providers, including BMO ETFs, Global X, Fidelity Canada, and Harvest ETFs, as well as with the TSX.[4]

Blossom Social was named to TechTO's 2025 Canadian Rocketships list, which recognises Canada's fastest-growing technology startups. The company reported recording its first CA$1 million revenue quarter in Q3 2025, hosting more than 1,500 attendees at an investor event at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, and reaching over 500,000 platform members.[5]

Platform

Blossom's platform requires users to link self-directed brokerage accounts in order to post about their holdings and trades, a design choice intended to ensure that shared investment information is backed by actual portfolio activity rather than unverified claims. The platform supports connections with major Canadian and American brokerages, including Wealthsimple, Questrade, Fidelity Investments, Charles Schwab, and Robinhood.[1]

The application includes a social feed, portfolio analytics tools, dividend tracking, and an educational component structured around short lessons. The platform offers both a free tier and a paid subscription tier, Blossom PRO, which provides additional analytical tools including geographic exposure breakdowns and advanced portfolio analysis. Revenue is derived from paid subscriptions and brand partnerships with asset managers and ETF providers.[2][6]
