Black Mekon are a garage rock/punk blues band from Birmingham UK, formed in 2007.

The group consists of 'Black Mekon' on vocals, guitar, 'Mekonotron 2000' and harmonica and 'his brother Black Mekon' on drums.

Although they record almost exclusively as a duo when playing live they would often incorporate a third member on drums or guitar, until 2019 when they stripped back down to a duo for all recordings and live performances.

They have recorded 7 studio albums, 3 live albums, 1 compilation and a 7 inch vinyl collection.

HISTORY

Black Mekon formed in 2007 in Digbeth, Birmingham UK. Devised as an art piece for Myspace, the duo disclosed nothing on the page but a single recording with no information or images, which piqued the curiosity of several promoters and lead to them being booked to play shows in New York and Philadelphia in the US and Porto and Lisbon in Portugal.

Brazilian punk rocker Marco Butcher of Thee Butchers Orchestra booked them to record with him and to tour together Brazil, which grew into 3 successful tours over 2008 and 2009.

After several self released albums under the ColdRice Records label, they signed with PNKSLM (Punkslime) Recordings in 2013, and put out both the band and the labels first full length vinyl 'Stolen Bible 2'. To celebrate the album's release, PNKSLM booked appearances at South by Southwest|SXSW 2014 which culminated in a show with one of Black Mekon's heroes Kid Congo Powers.

Stolen Bible 2 became a cult hit in Japan and the band travelled to Tokyo to play a halloween show with Guitar Wolf. This lead to several tours of Japan between 2014 and 2019 and a long standing friendship with the Japanese garage rock band KING BROTHERS, who were a big influence on Black Mekon's formative years.

In 2015 In lieu of releasing a follow up album, they decided to self release an ambitious 7 inch subscription, a six disc collection showcasing their favourite artists on the flip side of each single. The 45 Consortium included KING BROTHERS, The Jam Messengers, White Mystery, Bob Log III, Table Scraps and Obnox.

Black Mekon continue to release albums on PNKSLM Recordings and tour extensively.
