Black Justice is an Indian Hindi-language legal drama web series produced & written by Kapil Kakar[1] and directed by Bhavin Wadia. Starring Vijay Desai, Aftab Karim, Vedish Jhaveri, the title song sung by Neha Singh Rathore and dialog narration by Mukesh Khanna. The show revolves around Indian Justice system and its challenges.[2][3]

In June 2023, the Black Justice team launched its first trailer at the Press Club of India.[4][5] Within the attendance was the producer, Kapil Kakar, the lead singer, Neha Singh Rathore,[6] and Mukesh Khanna, who joined via a video conference.[7][8]

The pre-release web series is available on its official streaming website blackjustice.in.[9] It has 6 episodes with a run time of 3 hours and 34 minutes.[10]

Plot

The story revolves around an independent and principled lawyer, Pandey a.k.a. J.P., working at the Supreme Court and session court. As the story unfolds, he becomes aware of the complexities and challenges faced by the justice system in India. He files a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) in the Supreme Court to bring necessary reforms. He faces several challenges during the process. He calls several witnesses- a rape victim, a RWA President, a widow, and a distraught father who lost custody of his kids when his wife accused him of fake dowry related crimes. Through the testimonies of these victims, J.P. talks about the cracks in the justice system and proposes necessary reforms.[11]

Episode 1

Blood is found on the gate of the bungalow of a recently promoted judge. The judge remains unhinged and is getting congratulatory messages. The police launch an investigation. J.P., a middle-aged lawyer, decides to file a PIL in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, he makes propositions to make Supreme Court machinery more effective. He calls a distraught father wronged by the lower courts.

Episode 2

Father continues to share his experiences of facing discrimination and apathy during the custody trial of his kids with the court. J.P. calls a psychologist who points out the issues in the system and how it's impacting families during trials.

Episode 3

The investigation against the judge continues. J.P.'s wife worries for him as he is losing support in the lawyer community. J.P. calls a widow who narrates her experience of losing property due to maintainability problems of the court.

Episode 4

J.P. gets threatened by the Bar Council with suspension and show cause notice. During the court hearing, he calls a RWA president & activist to share his experience. He proposes reforms based on his case study.

Episode 5

J.P. calls a rape victim in the court who shares her experience of lower courts forcing her to marry her rapist. He proposes reforms for such cases. The judges reserve their judgment.

Episode 6

The cops meet 3 judges of the Supreme Court and tell them they have found a connection to J.P. with the blood found on the gate of the judge's bungalow. J.P. tells the court about the happenings of that day. The judges pass their judgment on reforms.

Reception

The series received favorable reviews and was selected for several film festivals. It won several film festivals including Moonwhite International Film Fest (MWIFF),[12] Blackboard International Film Festival awards in 2022,[13] The IndieFest Film Awards[14] and Pinnacle Film Awards in 2022.[15]
