William “Bill” Thomas is a Canadian-born business executive. He is the Global Chairman and CEO of KPMG.[2]. Prior to his appointment in 2017, Thomas was the CEO and Senior Partner of KPMG in Canada.[3]

Early Life & Education

Bill Thomas was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Thomas received a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from the University of British Columbia in 1989.[4] He achieved his Chartered Accountant Designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1992 and became a Fellow of the Institute in 2008.[4]

Career

KPMG in Canada (1990 – 2017)

Thomas joined KPMG in Vancouver in 1990 as an Audit Engagement Partner, serving clients such as Intrawest Corporation, the Belkin family and the Mark Anthony Group.[4]He served as Audit Leader for the firm’s Greater Vancouver practice, where he managed a staff of 450, and was appointed Office Managing Partner in 2006.[4]

Thomas relocated to Toronto in 2007 to serve as KPMG in Canada’s Deputy CEO before serving as Chief Executive Officer and Senior Partner for KPMG in Canada from 2009 to 2016.[4] In addition, he held the position of Chairman of KPMG’s Americas region from 2014 to 2017. In these roles, Thomas defined KPMG’s global strategy and built an inclusive and high-performing culture throughout the KPMG network. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and named a Catalyst Canada Honours Champion in recognition for his leadership in building a diverse and inclusive culture.

KPMG International (2017– )

In October 2017, Thomas was appointed Global Chairman and CEO of KPMG International for a four-year term.[5] In October 2020, Thomas was reelected to serve a second term as Global Chairman and CEO of KPMG International, extending his term to September 2026.[6]

Through his time as Global Chairman and CEO at KPMG International, Thomas has overseen the development and implementation of KPMG’s global strategy.[7] Under his leadership, KPMG launched a US$5 billion digital strategy investment plan with Microsoft in 2019 and expanded several key alliances, enabling KPMG to accelerate its and its clients’ digital transformation.[8] Bill continues to champion diversity and inclusion at all levels of KPMG. He has also advanced KPMG’s approach to ESG with a multi-year program to spend US$1.5 billion to focus on the ESG change agenda.[9][10]
