Bertrand Denzler (born 1963 in Geneva, Switzerland) is a Swiss and French musician and composer active in the fields of free improvisation, free jazz and contemporary music. As a performer and improviser, his main instrument is the tenor saxophone..[1]

Career

Denzler first played recorder, oboe and guitar in baroque and contemporary music ensembles, experimental rock bands and folk music groups. In the 1980s, he was a member of blues, jazz, soul and funk bands as a saxophonist.[2] Since the 1990s he is mainly active in the fields of free improvisation, free jazz and contemporary music. [3]

He has performed and recorded in Europe, Northern America, South America, the Middle East and the Far East as a member of numerous groups and ensembles, as well as solo and with artists from other disciplines (dance, sculpture, video, poetry, performance, theatre).

He has played with Sunny Murray, Benoît Delbecq, Hélène Labarrière, Norbert Pfammatter, Chamæleo Vulgaris, Hubbub, Trio Sowari (with Burkhard Beins and Phil Durrant), Momentum, Hans Koch, Axel Dörner, Michael Griener, Günter Müller, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Mattin, Taku Unami, the saxophone quartet Propagations, John Edwards and Eddie Prévost, Zoor, Sbatax, Neuköllner Modelle (with Joel Grip, Sven-Åke Johansson and Alexander Von Schlippenbach), Mark Wastell’s The Seen, Jason Kahn as well as solo.[4][5][6][7]

He has composed works for ensembles such as Onceim and CoÔ[8] as well as film music.

His music can be heard on recordings published by labels such as Potlatch, Matchless Recordings, Confront Recordings, Umlaut Records, Remote Resonator, Insub, Mikroton, Creative Sources, For4Ears, Ambiances Magnétiques, Leo Records, a.o.

He has also published texts about music, including the book The Practice of Musical Improvisation (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020) as a co-editor with Jean-Luc Guionnet.[9]

In 2018, he was awarded a "Get Going" grant by Fondation Suisa.[10]
