Bernard Aldine Pfriem is an American painter and founder of the Lacoste School of the Arts, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 7, 1914 and died in New York City on March 6, 1996.
Early life and education
Bernard A. Pfriem was born in 1916.[1]
Career
Pfriem worked as both a painter and educator throughout his career.[2] In the 1960s, he taught at the Cooper Union School of Art and Sarah Lawrence College.[2]
Lacoste School of the Arts
Pfriem helped found the Lacoste School of the Arts in Provence, southeastern France, where he served as director.[2] A large portion of his archived papers concern his tenure at the school.[2]
Artistic work
Pfriem's work is represented in major American museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds his 1963 self-portrait, a graphite on paper work measuring 84 × 48 inches.[3]
Personal life
Pfriem died in 1996.[2] Archives The Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution holds the Bernard A. Pfriem papers, measuring 8.4 linear feet and dating from 1932-1995. The collection documents Pfriem's career through biographical material, correspondence, writings, subject files, printed matter, photographic material, and sound, film, and video recordings.[2]
