Bergamo is a city in the Lombardy area of northern Italy. It is located roughly 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of Milan and approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) from Switzerland. It is also approximately 70 kilometres (43 miles) from Lakes Garda and Maggiore. The Bergamo Mountains, also known as the Orobie Alps, may be found just to the north of the city.

Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in the region of Lombardy, with a population of around 120,000 people. The city of Bergamo serves as the capital of the province of the same name, which is home to more than 1,103,000 people (2020). The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the official city borders, including a highly urbanised region that is home to little under half a million people in total. The metropolitan region that encompasses Bergamo is a component of the larger metropolitan area that encompasses Milan, which is home to more than 8 million people.

A historic walled centre of the city of Bergamo, known as Città Alta (which literally translates to "Upper Town"), is nested inside a series of hills, while the city's contemporary development is in the plains below. From July 9, 2017, the upper town has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because to the vast Venetian defence structures that surround it.

Since the A4 highway runs along the axis that connects Milan, Verona, and Venice, Bergamo has excellent connections to a number of towns located across Italy. Il Caravaggio International Airport, which handled 12.3 million passengers in 2017, is the airport that provides service to the city. This makes it the third-busiest airport in Italy. After Milan, the city of Bergamo is the one in the region of Lombardy that sees the second most tourists.
