Benson Uwheru born August 11th 1980 is a Nigerian Risk Compliant Expert and seasoned administrator who is the MD/CEO of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED).[1]

In 2023, he was named a Top Performer by The Peak Performer Africa Awards[2] among 100 other notable Africans including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogiame Atuwase III, The Olu Of Warri, Nduka Obiagbena Chairman Arise TV and The Publisher/Chairman of ThisDay Newspaper.[3]

Early life

Benson was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria to Urhobo parents Mr & Mrs Uwheru of Uwheru town in Ughelli North, Delta State.[4]

Career

Benson started his career as a Risk and Strategy Consultant in H. Pierson Associates Ltd[5] in 2006 and later moved to Deloitte in 2015. He moved from Deloitte to Ernst & Young as a senior manager and rose to a a director. In July 2019, Benson was made a Partner in Ernst & Young.[6][7]

While in Ernst & Young, Benson consulted in the UK for top banks in defining the mechanism to move to advanced level of risk measurements as outlined by Basel II guidelines. He Worked with Risk and Capital Management Team (UK) to set up a Basel II framework parameters for banks. Closely worked with staff of Risk and Capital Management in collating the data required for the preparation of Basel II integration. Benson led the engagement for the Review and Design of Corporate Governance frameworks for top organizations in Nigeria and West Africa. He was responsible for the board evaluation exercise of a Tier One bank across its 18 African subsidiaries where he managed cross functional teams and projects

Benson was the engagement manager for the Design and Implementation of three tier One banks Enterprise Risk Management Framework in Nigeria and Basel II Implementation

Benson led the assessment of risks and capital requirements in compliance to Pillar II requirements within Basel II (ICAAP) and to the regulatory framework of banks

He led the compliance project for Risk Based Supervision framework design and implementation for Nigerian Banks as required by the CBN.

Benson was appointed as the MD/CEO of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.[8]

Awards and honors

Benson has received recognition and praise for his contributions and achievements to business, community and support for the youth.

  • In December 2021, The Urhobo Progress Union honored Benson with the "Urhobo Young Innovators Award" in celebration of their 90th anniversary[9]
  • In 2023 Benson received The Peak Performer Africa Awards[10]

Personal life

Benson is married and with 2 children.
