Dylan Hendrix Bukowski Sinister, known professionally as Benedict Sinister,[1] is a French people music artist, video producer and poet. His music is characterized by his spoken word delivery combined with a range of musical styles, as well as controversial lyrics that refer to other songs, films, and books.[2]

Sinister is known for concealing his face, so that the other artists that he pays homage to in his work are emphasized above his own identity.[3]

Life and career

During the 1980s and 1990s, Sinister was a post-punk rock and indie pop guitar artist. He was a part of two bands, The Violent Four and Against Nature.[1] He started his solo music career in 2000 by giving performances worldwide, being a DJ in Senegal and playing covers in Mexico.[3]

Sinister created his first single using lines from 16 songs by Bryan Ferry and arranging them into rhyming verses. Los Angeles based DJ Miss Beltran released a lounge remix under the title “Ne Dramatise Pas” in October 2018[4] and DJ Christian B released a club remix under the title “16 Lines from Bryan Ferry” in December 2019.[2] The track “16 Lines from Bryan Ferry” was listed as a Top Five breakout track on the Billboard Dance Club chart in 2019.[5]

His second single called “Your Parents,” was an electro-pop track inspired by a French cabaret song by Vincent Delerm. It was released in June 2020.[1][6][7] His third single “I’ve Come to Tell You I’m Going Away” was released in November 2020. It was an adaptation and translation of Serge Gainsbourg’s 1973 popular song “Je suis venu te dire que je m’en vais.” Gainsbourg’s song references romantic poet Paul Verlaine, while Sinister has added a new spoken word part which refers to ten other artists who have addressed break-ups.[8][9]

His fourth single “Spitting Rhymes from Debbie Harry” was released in February 2021. The track is an homage to Debbie Harry. The video refers to the Blondie “Parallel Lines” album cover and is a punk parody of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video.[10][9] His next single, titled “Going Away,” released in April 2021, is a lounge track combined with adult alternative vocal style and subject matter. The track was in the number 8 position in the top ten in the UK MusicWeek Club Charts.[11]
