Benedict Okey Oramah (born 24 July 1961) is a Nigerian economist and businessman, and has been the President and chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Export–Import Bank (Afreximbank), since 2015.[1][2]

He has published a book, “Foundations of Structured Trade Finance”, and has written more than 35 articles on a wide range of African economic, trade and trade finance issues.[3]

Education

Oramah was born into a family of elders from Nnokwa, in Igbo country, south-eastern Nigeria. His father ‘Chief’ Lazarus A. Oramah was a member of the local traditional chieftaincy.[4]

Dr. Oramah holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural economics, obtained in 1987 and 1991 respectively, from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He received a B.Sc. degree, also in agricultural economics, from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1983.[5][6]

He holds an Advanced Management Certificate from Columbia University. On 22 July 2018, he was decorated Professor of International Trade and Finance by Adeleke University, Nigeria.

Professional career

Dr. Oramah joined Afreximbank as Chief Analyst in 1994 and was promoted to the position of Senior Director, Planning and Business Development in 2007. Prior to joining Afreximbank, he was an Assistant Research Manager at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank from 1992.[6][7] He was previously the Executive Vice President in charge of Business Development and Corporate Banking from (October 2008 – September 2015).[8]

Oramah, who was elected president of the bank in Lusaka in June 2015, at the last annual general meeting of the bank, was inaugurated in Cairo.[9]

Prof. Oramah was recently decorated by Vladimir Putin, President of the Russia Federation, with the Russian State award of the Order of Friendship[10] and by the Cameroonian Government with the “Knight of the National Order”.[11]

Personal life

He is married and has three children.[8]
