Ben Harburg is an American businessman and investor who frequently works as a commentator in the area of global markets and US-China relations on Bloomberg[1][2] and CNBC.[3][4] He is a private equity investor focused on the technology sector, Managing Partner of MSA Capital, named 2022 China Firm of the Year by PEI Magazine, and founder of MSA Novo.[5][6]

Career

Harburg studied at Barrington High School, alma mater of Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson and current Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and graduated in 2002.[7][8] While in High School, Harburg was a regional champion and national level speech and debate competitor, winning the famed Illinois Regional Lincoln Douglas Debate Championship in 2002.[9]

Harburg earned a BA from Tufts University in 2006, where he was a Joseph Neubauer Scholar and was a two-year captain of the varsity heavyweight rowing team[10][11].

He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship [12] to Germany for the 2006-2007 academic year, where he was based in the Islamic Sciences Department of Rhur University Bochum. He began his career as an Associate at The Boston Consulting Group in 2007, first in Germany and then in the Middle East.

In 2010, Harburg was appointed the Director of Mining Investments and Operations at CWT Limited, a then-Singapore Stock Exchange listed commodities trading and logistics company, commencing a 5 year career in commodities trading.[13]

In 2015, Harburg joined Jenny Zeng as a Managing Partner at MSA Capital.[14] Zeng and Harburg built MSA into a leading technology investment firm, recently recognized as the Firm of the Year, China and awarded Deal of the Year, Asia, by Private Equity International. The firm has invested in many Asian and Global technology sectoral leaders.

In 2018, Harburg founded MSA Novo, an emerging markets technology investments focused offshoot of MSA Capital. Today, MSA Novo are among the most active global emerging market venture capital firms.[15]

Harburg is recognized as the first native born American admitted to Tsinghua University’s elite PBC School of Finance.[16]

Other affiliations

Harburg serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Asia Innovations Group Limited, as well as various other private technology companies across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.[17]

Harburg is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on US-China Relations[18], a nonprofit organization and advisory body founded in 1966 to encourage understanding and cooperation between the United States and China. NCUSCR’s Board of Directors includes Henry Kissinger, Ray Dalio, Jakob Lew, Jerry Yang, and Jon Huntsman.

Harburg is a member of the Board of Trustees of Asian Cultural Council[19], a Rockefeller Family founded non-profit organization dedicated to advancing international cultural exchange between Asia and the U.S. and between the countries of Asia through the arts. Harburg serves on ACC’s Investment Committee.

Harburg is a 4th generation New Mexican, and serves on various public bodies in the state. He serves on the Board of Advisors, Tufts University School of Arts & Sciences[20], the Board of Advisors, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Tsinghua Center[21], and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[22]

Harburg is Co-owner of Cádiz Club de Fútbol, S.A.D, a Spanish professional team that plays in the country’s top football league (La Liga).[23]
