Ben Collins is an American journalist who covers disinformation, conspiracy theories, and extremism for NBC News.[1]

Education

Collins graduated from Emerson College in 2010.[1]

Career

Collins is a former editor for The Daily Beast where he worked from 2014 to 2018.[2][3]

Collins was inspired to cover disinformation-related stories because of the murder of Alison Parker (Parker was the girlfriend of Collins' roommate Chris Hurst). Parker was a local TV news reporter in Virginia and was shot dead while conducting a live TV interview. When searching for Hurst's name on the internet, Collins found different pieces of misinformation about Hurst and Parker. These included Hurst being a member of the CIA, Parker organizing her own murder, and both Hurst and Parker not existing.[3]

On February 3, 2020, Collins published a story about conspiracy theories started by Bernie Sanders and Andrew Yang supporters about the cancelled 2020 Iowa Democratic Caucus Des Moines Register poll.[3]

In May 2022, Collins tweeted about the Buffalo supermarket shooter having a toothache and he was heavily criticized for this by other Twitter users.[4]

Collins was temporarily prohibited from reporting about Twitter and Elon Musk in early December 2022 because of comments that he had made about both of these entities.[5]

In April 2023, he was announced as a winner of the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in TV Political Journalism given out by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California.[6]

On May 8, 2023, Collins gave an on-air interview on MSNBC about his reporting regarding the 2023 Allen, Texas outlet mall shooter's ideology.[7]
