Bedir Tekinerdoğan is a Turkish-Dutch computer scientist specializing in software and systems engineering.[1][2]. He is a Full Professor and Chair of the Information Technology Group at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Netherlands[3]. His research focuses on software engineering, systems of systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science[4]. Tekinerdogan has been included in Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists” ranking, which evaluates citation impact across disciplines [1]. In 2025, Turkish media reported on his recognition as one of the leading scholars at Wageningen University & Research.[5][6][7] ScholarGPS lists him among the top 0.05% of 30 million scholars worldwide for his impact and quality of scholarly work over the past five years. Additionally, he has been the top-ranked scholar at Wageningen University & Research, and top-ranked scholar in Computer Science in The Netherlands, for the past five years, according to ScholarGPS [8].
Academic and Professional Career
Tekinerdogan began his academic career as a researcher and later as an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente. His work during this period included contributions to software engineering including aspect-oriented software engineering, model-driven development, software architecture, and product line engineering. From 2002 to 2003, he was a visiting assistant professor at Bilkent University in Turkey, and in 2008 he joined the institution as a faculty member. At Bilkent, he founded the Bilkent Software Engineering Group (BILSEN)[9]. He was appointed Associate Professor by the Turkish Inter-University Council in 2010. In 2015, Tekinerdogan was appointed Full Professor and Chair of the Information Technology Group at Wageningen University & Research (WUR)[4][3]. Media outlets in the Netherlands and Turkey noted his appointment as the first professor in the Netherlands from a Turkish working-class immigrant family.[10][11][12][13][14][15]. From 2021 to 2025, he also chaired the Business Science Section at WUR, which coordinates several groups focused on sustainable business innovation. He has been a member of the management boards of 4TU.NIRICT,[16] the Dutch AI Coalition,[17] the Big Data Alliance, and the Dutch Association for Software Engineering (VERSEN).[18] He has also been a principal investigator at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) and a board member of the International Society of Agromatics (ISAM).[19]
Early Life and Education
Bedir Tekinerdogan is a son of a Turkish immigrant family that settled in the Netherlands in the early 1970s[13]. After the high school he started his study at the University of Twente, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science in 1994[20][21]. In 2000, Tekinerdogan completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Twente, conducting research in collaboration with Siemens-Nixdorf. His doctoral dissertation introduced the so-called synthesis-based software architecture design approach. As part of his thesis, and as the basis of the architecture design method he proposed as one of the first authors, the concept of domain-driven design [22]. This concept has since become an important element in designing robust software systems.
