It is the epicentre of the Greater Baton Rouge region, which is the second biggest metropolitan area in Louisiana.

The strategic location of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area atop the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico, is largely responsible for the region's historical significance. Because of this, a commercial district that was protected from seasonal floods was able to be developed. In addition to this, a system of levees was constructed that extended southward from the bluff in order to safeguard the riverside and the low-lying agricultural lands. It is a culturally rich hub because it was settled by immigrants from several European countries and African peoples transported to North America as slaves or indentured servants. These peoples were brought to North America as a result of the transatlantic slave trade. It was controlled by seven distinct governments: French, British, and Spanish in the colonial period; the Republic of West Florida, as a United States territory and state; Confederate, and United States again following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Currently, it is administered by the United States.

Within the Southern United States, Baton Rouge has emerged as a significant hub for the manufacturing, petrochemical, medical, academic, and research communities, as well as the film industry, and the rising technological sector. It is the site of Louisiana State University, which is both the flagship university of the LSU System and the biggest institution of higher education in the state of Louisiana. In addition, this area is home to Southern University, which serves as the crown jewel of the Southern University System, which is the only historically black college system in the United States. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge is the furthest upstream Mississippi River port that is capable of accommodating Panamax ships. It is also the 10th-largest port in the United States in terms of the total tonnage of goods that it exports. Lamar Advertising Company, BBQGuys, Marucci Sports, Piccadilly Restaurants, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, ExxonMobil, Brown & Root, Shell Chemical Company, and Dow Chemical Company are some of the major corporations that contribute to the economy of the Baton Rouge metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
