Professor Bashir Ahmed (born November 30, 1970) is a Bangladeshi Educator, worked as a Professor of Politics, covered a huge range of academic interest on Global Governance, Geo-Politics and International policy Expert. Professor Ahmed was an acting Dean of the faculty of Law and currently serving as a Dean of the faculty of Social Sciences at Jahangirnagar University[1]. Since starting his academic career in the public university of Bangladesh in 1997, Professor Bashir has done various significant research projects in parliamentary studies, impact assessments, anti-corruption commissions, and the capacity building of government institutions. Professor Ahmed's work in these areas has been supported by various national and international organizations, including USAID, UNDP, DIFD, and many more.
Early Life and Education
Bashir Ahmed was hail from a reputed Muslim family on November 30, 1970, at the village Sagardi, P.O Madhabdi, under the District of Narsingdi, Bangladesh.[2] He has been completed his Bachelor of Social Science and Master of Social Science degrees from the Department of Government and Politics, Jahangirnagar University in 1994 and 1996, respectively. Mr. Ahmed went for earning another Master Degree in 2004 from the Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden. Professor Bashir then move for doctoral degree from the South Asian Institute, at the University of Heidelberg, Germany[3].[4]
Academic Career
Professor Ahmed's academic career spans over two decades, during which he has held various teaching and administrative positions. He started his teaching career as a Lecturer at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology from 1997 to 2000. Later, in 2000, he joined the faculty of Jahangirnagar University as a Lecturer in the Department of Government and Politics. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2003, Associate Professor in 2012, and Professor in 2017[5]. Mr. Ahmed has also been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Heidelberg in Germany from 2006 to 2009, a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Conflict Studies in Monterey, CA, USA in 2014, and a Visiting Scholar at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at City University of New York, USA in 2022.[6]
Furthermore, Ahmed has held several administrative positions at Jahangirnagar University, including Chair of the Department of Government and Politics from 2013 to 2016, Director of the Teacher-Students Centre from 2016 to 2020, Provost of Sheikh Hasina Hall from 2018 to 2022, and Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2018 to 2020. He is also a member of the university's Senate and has served as President of the Provost Committee from 2019 to 2020.[7] [8]
Research and Publications
Professor Ahmed is a prolific writer and has published numerous articles in various academic journals, including the Jahangirnagar University Journal of Law, the Journal of Asian Studies, and the Global Journal of Science Frontier Research. He has also presented papers in many national and international conferences. He is the author of an academic book “Ahmed, B. (2022). Governance, Development and Diplomacy: Bangladesh Perspective, Shrabon Prokashoni Dhaka.” His next research in the form of book titled “Ahmed, B. Evolving China Bangladesh Relations, Shrabon Prokashoni, Dhaka” is appearing soon. Moreover, he has also written some book chapters, reviewed and edited several books. Prof. Ahmed's works on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have been widely acclaimed. He has written several articles in different newspapers and journals about their political philosophy, nation building, state building, development thoughts, foreign policy, and leadership.
Prof. Ahmed is affiliated with several academic organizations, including the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, the Liberal Forum of Bangladesh, and the Political Science Association of Bangladesh.
Social Works
Apart from his academic work, Bashir Ahmed is also actively involved in various social organizations. He serves as Chairman of the Priti Foundation at Balapur, Madhobdi, Narsingdhi, and as Member Secretary of the Bangabandhu Shikkok Porishod at Jahangirnagar University. He also served the teaching community of Jahangirnagar University by holding the post of General Secretary. He also is a member of various Social and Community Associations for example, Narsingdi Welfare Association, Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association.
