Karne Shireesha (born 15 June 1997), known as Barrelakka, is an Indian politician focussing on unemployment problem in Telangana state of India. She contested as MLA in the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly election from Kollapur.[1] [2][3][4]

Early life

Karne Shireesha was born in Marrikal village of Mahbubnagar district, now part of Nagarkarnool district, Telangana, India. She completed graduation with an aspiration to become a police constable. She further studied and prepared for many goverment jobs without any success.[5] [6]

Disappointed over her unmployment, she tried various short term jobs, like, shop worker and short film actor, and finally settled as buffalo herder. She became known as Barrelakka (i.e. sister with buffaloes). She became most popular when she posted an online video with her herd of buffaloes and described rearing buffaloes as her source of income because of lack of job oppurtunities.[7][8]

Being desperate over the inordinate delay in notifications for government jobs, many unmployed youth identified themselves with Sirisha. She became a symbol of growing unemployment situation in country. The government perceieved it as public mischief on social media and loged a case against her.[9][10]

In 2023 Telangana assembly elections, she contested as the independant candidate to raise awareness about unemployment of youth.
