Barra Best (born 1982,Belfast) [1] is a weather presenter, journalist, and television presenter with BBC Northern Ireland. He is part of the presenting team for BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Newsline.[2]

Journalism career

Best began his broadcasting career at Belfast Citybeat in 2006 as journalist. He moved to become a journalist with BBC Northern Ireland in February 2007. [3]

In addition to his broadcasting career at BBC Northern Ireland, Best has presented BBC Northern Ireland's Children in Need from 2014-18 [4] [5].

Television

Best has presented a series of documentaries for BBC Northern Ireland. Two series of Walk the Line explored Northern Ireland's lost railways [6] [7]. In Weather Watchers with Barra Best, he experienced how the Irish climate shapes people's lives, including how important the accuracy of forecast is for farmers and surfers. [8]

In 2018's Coast Lives, Best travelled the coast of Northern Ireland meeting those for whom the sea plays a major part in their lives [9]. Barra on the Bann saw Best make his way along the River Bann, meeting some of those who live, work and play on Northern Ireland's longest river [10] and was followed by Barra on the Foyle [11] where he travelled along the River Foyle in Derry, Tyrone, and Donegal [12]

A new series in 2021, Barra's Return of the Wild [13], saw Best present a natural history series revealing how endangered animals across the UK and Europe are being helped by conservationists.[14]

Barra's Wild Days Out in 2021 [15] saw Best travel the length and breadth of Northern Ireland, venturing into its wild and beautiful landscapes and meeting locals along the way [16].

Personal life

Best studied at De La Salle College, Belfast and Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, completing a degree in Information Systems . He then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in broadcast journalism at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, Lancashire [17].
