Tóth Barnabás (name variation: Tóth Barna) (Strasbourg, 1977. december 9. – ) Hungarian film director, screenwriter, actor and film producer, founding member of the Momentán Társulat. In 2019, his short film Susotázs was selected for the shortlist of 10 short films for the Academy Award[1], and a year later his feature film Those Who Remained was included in the shortlist for the 2020 Academy Awards. [2]

Career

From the age of seven, he attended the Harlequin and then the Cilinder Children's Theatre. At the age of nine, he appeared for the first time inXantus János's film Hülyeség nem akadály, then after playing child roles in Eldorádó, A legényanya and several narrative films, he got the main role in Szabó Ildikó's drama Child Murders; for shaping the figure of Zsolt Balogh in 1993, the 24th. He received a special award at the Hungarian Film Festival[3] and a certificate of recognition at the "Stars of Tomorrow" festival in Geneva. [4] From the age of ten to the age of twenty, he attended Margit Földessy's Theater and Drama Studio [5]. Already as a child, he lent his voice to several films and series, so for example he contributed as a voice actor in the films A gumimacik (Adventures of the Gummi Bears), Beverly Hills 90210, Trainspotting, and Majd megdöglik érte (I'll Die for You). [6]

At the age of seventeen, he graduated from Könyves Kálmán Gimnázium in Újpest, while continuously filming and acting in the Csiky Gergely Theater, the József Katona Theater, and the Comedy Theater in Kaposvár. In 1995, he was unsuccessfully admitted to the Acting Department of the College of Theater and Film, so he chose the International Communication and Advertising major at the College of Foreign Trade, where he did not have to take an entrance exam thanks to his academic results and excellent knowledge of English and French.

Since he was still attracted to film, he applied to acting again two years later, but was rejected a second time. In 1998, with a diploma in economics in his pocket, he was admitted to the then-starting producer program at the Theater and Film Academy, then transferred to director and completed both programs together in 2003.[7]

In 2002, as a member of an international crew of three, he filmed seven short documentaries in seven countries for the international television production called Volunteers' Odyssey, which presented humanitarian or human rights volunteer organizations. [8] In 2007, he directed the television comedy series Born Loser, which was the first HBO series based on a Hungarian script.

His first feature film, Camembert Rose, was completed in 2009, for which he was the director, screenwriter, and also main actor. His film father was played by Zoltán Bezerédi, with whom he had previously worked in dubbing roles.

In 2013, he managed to get Pogány Juditot and Kovács Zsoltot to play the main roles in his short film Redesign. The film didn't have a big response at first, but three years later it really "exploded the world wide web" - it reached over a million clicks in four days.

His short film Susotázs premiered in Hungary at the Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival on April 4, 2018, and was then selected for several prestigious European and American festivals, including the Manhattan Short Film Festival, which was also screened in Los Angeles as part of a traveling festival, thus becoming eligible for an Oscar nomination. The work was selected for the shortlist of 10 short films in the best live-action short film category of the 2019 Oscars. In September 2019, his film drama Those Who Remained debuted at the 46th Telluride Film Festival, which Hungarian cinemas began showing that month. Hungary entered this film in the 2020 Academy Award competition, where it also reached the shortlist in the category of the best international feature film. [9]The work, which was originally made for television, was broadcast for the first time by Duna Television in May 2020. The book on which the film is based was written by psychologist Zsuzsa F. Várkonyi in 2004 under the title Girls' Novel of Men's Times.

He showed his talent not only behind the camera, he took on acting work in numerous, mainly short and feature films. He is a founding member of the Momentán Társulat and has collaborated in the production of more than seventy audiobooks for the blind and visually impaired. He does not consider himself a "real actor", but an "improv actor" due to his great improvisational skills, and although he has taken on many stage, film, and dubbing roles, film direction has always been closer to his heart. He often assists in international productions, and he also created some of his own works in this way. In 2017, he was the assistant director of the Hungarian crew of the French-Belgian film drama La promesse de l'aube about the life of Romain Gary starring Pierre Niney and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

His wife, Linda Lisztes, is an actress, also a member of the Momentán Társulat. They have three children.[10]

He speaks English and French flawlessly, and he can also improvise, but he has also played a scene in German.
