Biography

In 1978-1981 she trained as a goldsmith at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hanau near Frankfurt/Main,[1] Germany, and in 1982-1987 she studied Visual Arts at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude.[2] There she discovered her preference for painting and changed direction.

In 1993 the Standard Bank Namibia Biennale awarded her first prize in the category "Professional Artists".

She participated in numerous group exhibitions in several countries and held her first solo exhibition in 1994 at the National Art Gallery of Namibia.

In 1998 she opened her own art school in Klein Windhoek, the Barbara Böhlke Art School.

Work

Barbara Böhlke is a prolific artist who works mainly in oil. She uses colours and brushstrokes to create an energy-carrying space that allows her to express moods and longings and to suggest associations.

Her speciality is large-scale painterly works that are a manifestation of the psychological interior. Among her collections are works with self-developed techniques that she has personalised over the years to express an association with the vast landscapes and skies of the land.[3]

For the paintings presented in her exhibition Shifting Horizons (2018), she favoured natural pigments: charcoal, ashes and especially Otjize, a mixture of butter and ochre that Himba women use to coat their bodies and hair.
