Baigoman is a village in Gaya, Bihar. It comes under Punakala Panchayat of Paraiya Block, a district sub division. It was founded by a Kachhwaha Rajput wrestler (Pehlwan) around 200 years ago. Earlier this place was a non agricultural, semi-forest land which was controlled by Tekari Raj. The Baigoman House is also called as Baigoman Kachehari as the zamindars used to seat there for Aam Sabha. It is the only village in Paraiya block acquiring the largest area of agricultural land.[1] Magahi is the local language, with Hindi. Only Hindu people reside in this village of different casts which are Rajput, Ahir, Teli, Nai, Barhi, Lohar, Bhumihin. Phurhuria, Punakalan, Kamaldah and Jaitiya are the nearby village located North, South, West and East to the Baigoman. Raghunath Singh was the last zamindar of Baigoman, who was one of the richest man in Gaya of his time and he was known for his lavish life style. He is also known for providing residential land to the Bhumihin people as well as bringing electricity and water via canal to this village.[2]

History

Around 200 years back, this region was granted by Tekari Raj to Raj Shri Kashinath Singh Ji, a warrior from Saran helped then Maharaja of Tekari to solve the water crisis of the state by dissolving dispute for southern dam. Baigoman was a non salute, non-jurisdictional zamindari state covering around 250 square kilometers of area. Though they were not recognized as King, they still held power in the region of Tekari and Gurua. They supported Tekari Kings against Britishers in administration and held the tax within the Tekari to develop the town.[3]

With the abolition of the zamindari system in 1950, disputes arose regarding the estate, as also happened in other areas of Bihar. There were eruptions of violence involving the Rajput and Bhumihar people on the one hand and members of the Dalit, Yadav, and Gareri communities on the other, most notably the beheading of a Bhumihar in 1979 that was followed by reciprocal raids on villages a few months later.
