B. Shree Sundar Kumar also known as The Kanjiraman is a Kanjira player in the world of rhythm music. He is a multi-percussionist, but is best known for playing the Kanjira.[1]

Early life and initial training

He hails from a musical family and entered the world of music at the age of 3. He underwent his initial mridangam training under his father, Dr. K. B. S Mani, a renowned mridangam player himself and gave his first concert at the age of 3. He received further training by mridangam player, Karaikudi Mani who helped him practice playing mridangam, and to take up the Kanjira.[2]

Works and collaborations

"Beats Festival", a three-day rhythm festival in Chennai, India, is his brainchild. This festival was started in 2019 and is set to happen during every Madras Music Season during the month of Margazhi. He has appeared in Season 3 of MTV Coke Studio India and performed Konnakol rap during which he came up with his stage name Kanjiraman. Before that he also performed on MTV Unplugged along with Kailash Kher. He has also collaborated with Jennifer Batten, who was the lead guitarist for Micheal Jackson. He is also the founder of the Kanjira quartet, Laya Chathura, an ensemble of 4 Kanjira players.[3]

Awards and recognitions

B.Shree Sundar Kumar is an ‘A’ grade artist of All India Radio and the recipient of the scholarship from the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT). He also received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2016 for his notable talent in the field of Carnatic instrumental music.[4][5]

Personal life

Shree Sundar Kumar is currently based in Chennai. His father was a renowned Mridangam player, both his sisters are vocalists. His maternal uncles are all into music – AS Krishnan – morsing, AS Ranganathan – Mridangam, AS Shankar – Ghatam and AS Murali – Vocal.
