Avis E. Buchanan has served as the director of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia since 2004.[1] [2]
Early Life
Avis grew up in Prince George's County in Washington, DC[1].[3] Buchanan studied spanish and criminal justice at Michigan State[3].
Legal Career
Buchanan received her law degree from Harvard Law School. She went on to clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for Judge Theodore J. McMillan who was the first Black judge on the Eighth Circuit. [3] Buchanan joined the Public Defenders Service as a staff attorney in 1982[1] after having been an investigative intern for the office during a summer off from law school. [3]
In 2014, Buchanan earned the Washington Council of Lawyers' President's Award for Public Service.[4]
