Aviation encompasses the activities associated with mechanical flight as well as the aircraft manufacturing sector. Fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, as well as morphable wings and wing-less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air vehicles such as hot air balloons and airships, are all examples of aircraft.

The invention of the hot air balloon, an instrument capable of atmospheric displacement via buoyancy, signalled the beginning of aviation in the 18th century. Some of the most important advances in aviation technology began with Otto Lilienthal's controlled gliding flight in 1896; then, in the early 1900s, the Wright brothers built the world's first powered aircraft, which was a major step forward in importance. Because of the advent of the jet engine, aviation has seen significant technical advancement and has been a key mode of transportation across the globe since then.
