Avdi Hysa (or Avdi Hisa) (c. 1830-1862) was an Albanian highlander (malesor) and shepherd who lived in the Malesia e Krajës (Kraja highlands) in the region of Vranina in 1862.[1] According to Gjergj Fishta's written work Lahuta e Malsis Avdi Hysa is described a simple shepherd guarding his sheep. At the time, there was political tension between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Montenegro. That summer, Prince Danilo I, Prince of Montenegro desired to expand on Albanian inhabited regions and for this purpose hired 13 bandits (denoted as "cuba" by Fishta) who began plundering the Albanian inhabitants of Vranina.[2] Vulo Radovic, the leader of the bandits, eventually arrived at the meadow of Avdi Hysa and asked that he give up his sheep. Avdi Hysa refuses, tries to fire his breshana (an italian word for musket) but the rifles jams. Avdi Hysa is then shot by Vulo Radovic, and he plunders his xhamadan, yatagan and musket.[3] The he-goat, denoted as "cjapi", flees and is chased by Vulo Radovic, and when Avdi Hysas sister Hajkuna sees the goat, she knows that her brother has been killed and begins to mourn. According to Fishta, this enables the Albanian border guard Oso Kuka to avenge Avdi Hysa.
