Auto racing (also known as car racing, motor racing, or automobile racing) is a kind of motorsport in which cars compete against one another in a racetrack setting.

Since the advent of the car, there has been an ongoing tradition of auto racing. Rallies and races of all kinds were organised, with the first one being held as early as 1867. Many of the early events were essentially reliability tests, with the goal of demonstrating that these new machines were a viable means of transportation. However, these reliability tests quickly evolved into an important opportunity for car manufacturers to showcase their vehicles. By the 1930s, there were specialised racing vehicles on the market.

Currently, there are many distinct categories, each with its own set of laws and restrictions.
