Dr. Austin L. Chiang (born November 4, 1985) is an American gastroenterologist, advanced endoscopist, and medical educator recognized for incorporating social media into healthcare communication.[1] He is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the Endoscopy business at Medtronic and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.[2]
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Irvine, California, Chiang moved to Taiwan at age 10, returning to the United States for higher education. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from Duke University, with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Chiang finished his internal medicine residency training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia-Cornell affiliated. He completed fellowships in bariatric endoscopy and gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School and an advanced endoscopy fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He also received a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Career
In October 2021, Chiang was appointed as the first CMO for Medtronic's Endoscopy business, with responsibility for medical affairs and clinical strategies for devices such as the GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module. At Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, he leads the Endoscopic Weight Loss Program, specializing in advanced endoscopic procedures and obesity treatment.[3]
Social Media Advocacy
Chiang is a leading advocate of the use of social media in healthcare, with the goal of fighting misinformation and improving patient education. He has gained a large following on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where he posts medical information and health advice. In 2019, he became the first Chief Medical Social Media Officer at Jefferson Health. He also established the Association for Healthcare Social Media (AHSM), encouraging responsible use of social media among healthcare.[4]
Recognition
In 2018, Healio Gastroenterology named Chiang the Disruptive Innovator of the Year. The following year, he was recognized as the Philadelphia Inquirer Influencer of Healthcare Rookie of the Year. In 2021, he was nominated for the GLAAD Media TikTok Advocate of the Year award for using the platform to promote inclusivity and education.[5]
Personal Life
Chiang is openly gay and advocates for LGBTQ+ representation in medicine.
