Austin Chiang is a Taiwanese-American interventional gastroenterologist, medical device executive, internet personality, and author. He gained popularity on social platforms including Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn as a prominent voice in healthcare social media.

Early life and education

Born in Southern California, Chiang was later raised in Taipei, Taiwan where he attended Taipei American School. He received his Bachelor's of Science in Biology with a minor in Music from Duke University in Durham, NC in 2007. He earned his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 2011. He earned a MPH (Master in Public Health) from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA in 2015.

Chiang was also an alumnus of the ABC News Medical Unit in 2011.

Career

Medicine

He completed internal medicine residency at Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and gastroenterology fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, and obesity medicine.

Chiang began his practice of interventional gastroenterology and bariatric endoscopy in Philadelphia, PA where he remains director of bariatric endoscopy and an assistant professor of medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.[1]

Social media

Chiang speaks publicly about using social media to disseminate accurate health information as a board-certified health professional.[2]

In 2018, he was named the first Chief Medical Social Media Officer of Jefferson Health, the first to hold this position at any health system.[3]

In 2019, he was the founding president of the Association for Healthcare Social Media (AHSM), the first non-profit professional society focused on educating of health professionals on the use of social media.[4] AHSM partnered with entities like Cochrane Collaboration and social media platforms like YouTube.[5]

In 2019, he was named the Influencers of Healthcare Rookie of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was named among Medscape's 20 Top Physician Social Media Influencers in 2019.

In 2020, his was featured in the The New York Times for his informative short-form videos, specifically with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

In 2022, he joined the White House roundtable for healthcare social media leaders.

Medical technology

In 2021, Chiang was named the first Chief Medical Officer for the gastrointestinal arm of Medtronic, the world's largest medical device company by revenue.[7]

Book

Gut: An Owner's Guide is an illustrated guide to gastrointestinal health and pathology to be released in April 2024 by DK Books/Penguin Random House.[8]

LGBT Advocacy

Chiang has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ health.

In 2020 he was named among TikTok 25 LGBTQI+ Trailblazers.[9] In 2021, he was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for the category TikTok Queer Advocate of the Year.[10]
