Atsushi Yamaguchi (born November 6, 1953).[1], is a Japanese people|Japanese lawyer and academic who has served as an associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan since 2017.

Education and Career

Yamaguchi was born on November 6, 1953 in Japan. He attended the University of Tokyo and graduated with a degree in law in 1976. In 1979 he began teaching law at that university as an associate professor. He was granted the status of full professor in 1992. In 1994 he joined the Criminal Law Society of Japan and became it's director in 2009. In 2012 he became the director of the National Bar Examination Commission[2]. In 2014 Yamaguchi became Emeritus|Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokyo (he retains the honorary status of professor, but does fulfill the role)[3]

Supreme Court

On February 6, 2017, Yamaguchi was appointed to the Supreme Court of Japan. In Japan, justices are formally nominated by the Emperor of Japan|Emperor (at that time, Akihito) but in reality the Cabinet chooses the nominees and the Emperor's role is a formality.[4]

Yamaguchi's term is scheduled to end on November 5, 2023 (one day before he turns 70). This is because all members of the court have a mandatory retirement age of 70.[5]
