Asma Akram (Urdu: اسماء اکرم) (29 August 1990), is a Pakistani orthopedic surgeon, notable for being the first woman to earn a Master of Surgery (MS) degree in Orthopedics from the University of Health Sciences, Lahore.[1][2][3][4][5]. Asma has worked across multiple fields within orthopedic surgery, including hand and upper limb surgery, hip and Knee replacement, trauma, and arthroplasty. In July 2024, she successfully defended her MS thesis titled "Comparative Study of Functional Outcome & Union of Medial Malleolus Fracture Treated by 4 mm Lag Screw Versus Tension Band Wiring in Denis Weber Type B and C"[6][7]
Early life and Education
Born in Sialkot, Akram received her early education at Allama Iqbal Public School in Sialkot. She later pursued a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Health Sciences (UHS), completing her degree in 2015. She continued her academic journey by enrolling in the MS program at Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College, from which she graduated in 2024. Akram is recognized as the first female student to complete her MS in Orthopedic Surgery from this institution.
Career
Asma began her professional career as a Medical Officer at Idrees Teaching Hospital, Sialkot, in 2016 [8]. In 2017, she joined the Department of Pathology at Khawaja Muhammad Safdar Medical College as a Demonstrator. She completed her postgraduate training in orthopedic surgery between 2018 and 2024. During her training, she worked at several renowned medical institutions, including the Children’s Hospital in Lahore, Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Lahore, and Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital in Sialkot.
Her work has focused on a range of orthopedic procedures, including trauma surgery, arthroplasty, and hand and upper limb surgery. She is currently practicing orthopedic surgery at her clinic in Agrics Town, Lahore, where she continues to serve patients.
Contribution to Women in Medicine
Asma’s achievement in becoming the first female orthopedic surgeon with an MS degree from UHS is regarded as a milestone within the medical community. Her success has been noted for contributing to a growing trend of Pakistani women pursuing careers in specialties traditionally dominated by men.
