Arthur Tugume is a Ugandan scientist, researcher and academician specialising in Plant - Pathology, Virology, Genetics and Biotechnology. Arthur is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology, College of Natural Sciences of Makerere University. Arthur is also the current Chair/Head of the Department. He was born in 1975 in Kinkizi County, Kanungu District in South Western Uganda.

Education

Assoc. Professor Tugume received his PhD in Plant Virology in 2010 from the University of Helsinki, Finland. He also holds a Master of Science in Crop Science (Genetics and Plant Breeding) – 2003 from Makerere University and Bachelor of Science (Botany and Biochemistry) – 1999. For highschool, he attended Ntare School, Mbarara, Uganda for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE); and Makobore High School, Kinyasanyo, Rukungiri District, Uganda for Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE). Arthur also attended Burora Primary School, Rukungiri District for his primary education.[1]

Work experience

Assoc. Professor Tugume is the Chair/ Head of the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology. He joined Makerere University in 1999 as an Assistant Lecturer and has risen through the ranks to Associate Professorship in 2018. He has also served the University in various leadership and management capacities: Coordinator and Team-leader – Makerere University and University of Okayama, Japan partnership, October 2012 to-date; Coordinator – College of Natural Science Research and Grants Initiative, August 2012 to-date; Chairperson – CoNAS NORHED Capacity Building Programme, February 2012 to May 2013; and Chairperson School of Biosciences Research Group, May 2012-April2015. Assoc. Prof. Tugume teaches courses at undergraduate and graduate level. He has supervised and mentored over 20 students at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the region.[2]

Research and publications

Arthur is an international Researcher and External Examiner with strong links to several Universities in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. He has served as a Grants Reviewer for RUFORUM, ASARECA and International Foundation for Research. He has also served as a reviewer for several international Journals like Annals of Applied Biology (Wiley); Plant Pathology (Wiley); Plant Disease (American Phytopathological Society); Plant Disease Notes (American Phytopathological Society); Journal of General Plant Pathology (Springer); Phytopathology (American Phytopathological Society); African Journal of Biotechnology (Academic Journals); BMC Plant Biology (Springer Nature); Virus Research (Elsevier); Molecular And Physiological Plant Pathology (Elsevier); Current Plant Biology (Elsevier); African Journal of Agricultural Research (Academic Journals); and Frontiers in Plant Sciences.[3]
