Artemio Limtuaco Vergel de Dios (October 20, 1917 – October 25, 2005) was a Filipino businessman, civic leader, and army veteran. He is recognized as the founder of JCI Manila, the first chapter of Junior Chamber International in the Philippines [1] and later spread throughout Asia. He is also the namesake of the annual Temiong Awards of JCI Philippines.

Early life and education

Vergel de Dios was born in Manila to Dr. Agustin Vergel de Dios y De Leon and Doña Adelina Limtuaco y Tiaoqui. He studied at the Ateneo de Manila University (HS 1934) and completed a degree in commerce at De La Salle College in 1938.

Career

After graduation, he worked in banking and real estate before being commissioned as lieutenant in the Philippine Army during World War II. In 1947, he organized the Manila Jaycees (now JCI Manila)[2], which became the first JCI chapter in Asia and the precursor of JCI Philippines.[3]

Vergel de Dios also served as Davao Jaycees President (now JCI Davao)[4] later served as a commercial attaché in Europe under the Philippine government, helping promote international trade. He retired from public service in the 1970s and remained active in civic causes until his death in 2005.

Legacy

In 1983, he received the Distinguished Lasallian Award for community service.[5] Since 2006, the Temiong Awards [6] [7] of JCI Philippines have been named in his honor.
